Description

University Lake School (ULS) is seeking a cook who is passionate about making a difference in the lives of students through a robust, sustainable, healthy, and meaningful lunch program.  This appointment is available beginning January 6, 2025 and is a school-year position.

The ULS meal program currently serves approximately 100-125 healthy lunches to students each school day.  Students range in age from 2 years old to 18 years old.  We aim to utilize a Farm to Table approach with fresh ingredients and many local, organic, and made-from-scratch food items.  In addition to fostering the health and well-being of our community, the school aims to enhance the community dining experience for a deeper appreciation of food and nutrition, connection to nature, and environmental and campus stewardship.

Expectations include:

  • Comply with nutrition and food hygiene guidelines for school communities, and ensure all helpers in the kitchen are doing the same.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and ServSafe compliant kitchen environment.
  • Practice and ensure proper  culinary techniques are utilized.
  • Prepare meals that emphasize the use of fresh ingredients and made-from-scratch food items.
  • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships among the kitchen team members, teachers, families, students, and staffulty.
  • Support the sustainability efforts of the program, including systems that model and teach composting.
  • Support other schoolwide initiatives such as the Farm to Table Fridays Community Lunch in the Upper School featuring guest chefs from the community, and other schoolwide events.
  • Follow protocols that align with the food allergy policy, and the current food allergies on file at the school.
  • Integrate the meal program into relevant lessons and the school culture and experience where possible.
  • Contribute to the School culture by establishing rapport with students and their families, serving as an advisor and student advocate, and participating in school-wide events.
  • Collaborate as a team player with colleagues and administrators. 
  • Communicate effectively and timely with the School community.
  • Commit to ongoing professional development. 
  • Represent the School as a steward of the community both inside and outside the classroom.

Requirements

  • Experience working in a kitchen
  • Strong organizational and management skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish a friendly kitchen environment
  • Love of food and appreciation for the school environment
